Tier 1 — Global Hospitality Designer
Hotels, flagship restaurants, signature programsRockwell, Yabu Pushelberg, AvroKO, Meyer Davis, Champalimaud — luxury hotels + flagship F&B.
An interior designer translates your concept and brand into a buildable FF&E package: lighting, finishes, millwork, banquettes, signage, art. For a restaurant or bar you want one with hospitality-specific experience (durability, sightlines, sound, code-compliant fabrics), not just residential — they should partner cleanly with your architect of record and stay inside your buildout budget.
Hospitality interior design is unusually star-driven — operators don't hire firms for logistics, they hire them for a *point of view*. You hire Roman and Williams because you want the Roman and Williams look (patinated brass, exposed brick, layered antiques). You hire Yabu Pushelberg because you want a Yabu Pushelberg lobby (luxury layered material palettes, custom furniture programs). The portfolio is the product, which means a $5M restaurant by Bentel & Bentel is a fundamentally different product than a $5M restaurant by a mid-tier shop. Comparing fees across firms is hard for the same reason — what you're buying isn't comparable.
The NYC market is unusually concentrated. Of the top 10 firms on Interior Design magazine's 2025 Hospitality Giants list (ranked by reported hospitality fees), four are NYC-headquartered: Rockwell Group ($40.0M in 2024 fees, #1 NYC and #3 globally), AvroKO ($20.7M, #4 globally), Perkins Eastman/ForrestPerkins ($19.1M), and Wimberly Interiors ($17.8M). Below the global top tier sit the NYC boutique specialists — Roman and Williams, Meyer Davis, Champalimaud Design, INC Architecture & Design, Stonehill Taylor, Bentel & Bentel, GRT Architects — and the international firms with NYC offices, anchored by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio (London + NYC, the Beekman, the Fifth Avenue Hotel, Café Carmellini).
Architecture license matters more than most operators realize. NYS Education Law Article 161 §8303 caps interior-design practice at work "not materially related to or materially affecting the building systems" — which every hospitality buildout *does* touch. So pure interior-design firms (Meyer Davis, Roman and Williams, Champalimaud, Yabu Pushelberg, Brudnizki) must partner with a separate Architect of Record on every NYC project. Dual-licensed firms — Bentel & Bentel, Stonehill Taylor, GRT Architects, Rockwell Group, INC Architecture & Design — file their own DOB drawings under one contract, killing the AOR-coordination handoff that plagues many projects. For a tight NYC restaurant fit-out, dual-licensed often saves 4-8 weeks.
NYC-specific traps: every hospitality fit-out triggers Article 161 jurisdiction (so an "interiors only" firm without an AOR will leave you scrambling); 75-occupant Place of Assembly threshold pulls in FDNY review on most restaurants; ADA Chapter 11 + NFPA 101 finishes class A/B; soft goods need NFPA 701 + CA TB 117-2013 + CA TB 133 fire ratings (banquettes, drapery, upholstered booths). On fees, AIA B152-2019 is the standard contract — and the trap to watch is uncapped reimbursables (travel, printing, renderings, model-making) which can balloon 5-15% of base fee, plus undisclosed FF&E trade-discount markup that turns a stated 12% fee into an effective 20%. Cap reimbursables at 2-5% of base fee and require full pass-through of FF&E trade discounts in the contract.
Rockwell, Yabu Pushelberg, AvroKO, Meyer Davis, Champalimaud — luxury hotels + flagship F&B.
Roman and Williams, Stonehill Taylor, INC, Bentel & Bentel, MBDS — boutique hotels + serious restaurants.
GRT Architects, Crème Design — emerging firms with proven NYC restaurant portfolios.
One contract for DOB drawings + interiors. Saves 4-8 weeks vs A+I split.
Interior firm + separate Architect of Record. The "name designer" model.
Beyer Brown, Innvision — hotel-brand FF&E purchasing, distinct from designer.
Rockwell Group is the largest NYC-based hospitality design practice and one of the most recognizable design brands in the world — 40+ countries, 125+ hotels, 500+ restaurants over four decades. Notable NYC + global work includes Equinox Hotel at Hudson Yards (the firm's most-cited case study), Nobu restaurants worldwide, W Hotels brand standards, multiple TAO Group venues, Union Square Cafe (Danny Meyer), and Dream Hotels. The firm pairs interior architecture with a separate theatrical/scenic design arm (LAB) that brings narrative-and-staging sensibility to interiors. $40.0M in 2024 hospitality fees (Interior Design 2025 Hospitality Giants).
AvroKO is unusual in having a sister entity — AvroKO Hospitality Group — that delivers F&B concept development, branding, and operational consultancy alongside the design practice. So AvroKO can deliver both the design and the operating concept for a venue. Notable NYC + global hospitality work: PUBLIC Hotel (Ian Schrager's lifestyle hotel NYC), Ace Hotel Kyoto, Smith & Mills (Tribeca), Saxon + Parole, Bar Moga. $20.7M in 2024 hospitality fees (#4 globally). Founded by William Harris, Adam Farmerie, Greg Bradshaw, and Kristina O'Neal.
Yabu Pushelberg is the standard-setter for luxury hotel interiors. NYC hotel portfolio includes the Park Hyatt New York, Four Seasons Downtown New York, Park Lane New York (1,178 rooms), and Moxy NYC Times Square (612 rooms) — a portfolio that spans ultra-luxury to lifestyle and demonstrates the firm's range. Notable retail crossover: Bergdorf Goodman interiors. Strengths: layered material palettes, custom furniture programs (Yabu Pushelberg has its own furniture collection), and the ability to deliver brand-defining hotel public space at scale.
Roman and Williams arguably defined the contemporary NYC restaurant aesthetic — patinated brass, exposed brick, vintage Edison bulbs, layered antique objects. Notable NYC hospitality work includes The Standard East Village, Ace Hotel NY (collaborative with Stonehill Taylor), Le Coucou (Stephen Starr's SoHo French restaurant), Veronika at Fotografiska, and La Mercerie at the Roman and Williams Guild. The firm operates a vertically integrated retail and product arm — Roman and Williams Guild — which sells furniture, lighting, and home objects, meaning they can both specify and supply much of the FF&E for their own projects.
Meyer Davis is a multidisciplinary practice covering hospitality, residential, retail, and workplace, with hospitality clients including Equinox Hotels, Loews Regency NY, Sonesta, Four Seasons, Rosewood, Mandarin Oriental, W Hotels, and 1 Hotels. The firm sits in the HD Platinum Circle and the ID Hall of Fame. Known for blending residential warmth into hospitality interiors — an approach that fits the contemporary "feels-like-home" hotel and members-club aesthetic.
One of the most established luxury hotel interiors firms in the world. Notable hospitality projects include the Waldorf-Astoria New York renovation (the firm's largest current project, in progress), the St. Regis New York, The Carlyle, The Plaza Legacy Suites, Raffles Singapore, Raffles Boston, and Hotel Bel-Air. Heritage-property restoration is the specialty — layered classical interiors that integrate seamlessly with landmarked exteriors. Engagements are typically multi-year, multi-phase, hybrid percentage-plus-reimbursable.
INC carries dual architecture + interior design licenses, which means INC can deliver Alt-1 and Alt-2 architectural filings in addition to interior specification. Notable hospitality work includes 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, the TWA Hotel (with Stonehill Taylor), QT Hotels, Dear Irving, and LiLiHo Yacht Club. The architecture-plus-interiors model means INC can take a hospitality project from envelope through napkin specification under a single contract — eliminating the architect/designer coordination handoff that plagues many projects.
Stonehill Taylor is one of the deepest hotel portfolios in NYC. Notable projects include the TWA Hotel (with INC Architecture & Design), The Whitby, Moxy Chelsea, the Ace Hotel NY (with Roman and Williams), the Refinery Hotel, the Crosby Street Hotel, the NoMad Hotel, and the Warren Street Hotel. Unusual in being primarily a hotel-vertical firm (rather than restaurant or mixed) and one of the most frequent collaborators with international design firms looking for a NYC-licensed Architect of Record.
MBDS notable NYC hospitality projects include The Beekman, The Surrey, The Fifth Avenue Hotel, Café Carmellini, and the Ritz-Carlton NoMad. Outside NYC, MBDS designed Annabel's (London members club) and Scott's. Strengths: members clubs, classical-yet-playful luxury interiors, restored heritage buildings. The NYC office gives MBDS the bench depth to deliver large NYC hotel projects without losing the founder's design voice.
