Background Music (BGM) System
1-3 zones · 60-72 dB(A) · 6-20 ceiling speakers70V ceiling speakers, one zone amp, BGM streaming. The cafe / restaurant default.
Audio-visual equipment vendors handle PERMANENT installs in your venue: ceiling speakers, DJ booths, projectors, TVs above the bar, control systems, and acoustic treatment. They differ from event-rental AV — these are the systems that live in the venue and need service contracts, warranty coverage, and a tech who can re-tune the room after a renovation.
This guide is for PERMANENT AV — speakers in the ceiling, the DJ booth bolted to the floor, the matrix in the rack, the LED wall behind the bar. It is not the event-rental world (that's Event Services). The two trades use the same brand names and overlap on personnel, but the install scope, permitting (NYC DOB low-voltage, fire alarm Chapter 907, Class 2/3 cabling), and lifecycle expectations (7-10 year refresh cycle, not a one-night load-in) are completely different. Confusing them is the most common mistake first-time operators make when they call an "AV guy" who turns out to be a rental house.
The single most expensive decision is picking the wrong tier of audio system for the program. Commercial audio splits into three tiers — background music (60-72 dB, ceiling speakers, one zone amp, $3-18K installed), foreground music (75-90 dB, full-range cabinets + subs, $25-90K installed), and high-energy / club (100-115+ dB, line arrays, dedicated subs, networked DSP, $150K-$1M+). A craft cocktail bar specced as a sports-bar BGM job will sound limp by 9pm; a dive bar specced as a club system bleeds budget on amps you'll never push. Type-fit before brand-fit, every time.
Brand-wise, NYC permanent AV runs on a tight stack. For speakers: JBL Professional and Bose DesignMax are the commercial workhorse defaults; QSC AcousticDesign + the Q-SYS ecosystem is the value-premium pick that doubles as DSP and control; L-Acoustics, d&b audiotechnik, and Meyer Sound are the European/US premium clubs that you can only buy through certified integrators. For DJ booth: Pioneer DJ CDJ-3000 + DJM-A9 or DJM-V10 is the visiting-DJ-rider standard; Allen & Heath Xone:96 is the underground/techno alternative. For control + DSP: QSC Q-SYS has taken the new-install share, Biamp Tesira is the incumbent, Crestron is for hotels and ballrooms with custom-programmed UCIs. For displays: Samsung QBR/QMR/OH and LG UH5F dominate commercial 16/7 — never spec a consumer TV behind a bar (warranty exclusion alone kills it). For projectors: Christie and Barco premium, Epson Pro L the volume workhorse, BenQ + Hisense laser UST for short-throw.
NYC-specific traps that wreck projects: low-voltage permits from DOB are required — your integrator pulls them and the inspector signs off; skipping costs $500-$10,000 plus opened walls. Plenum-rated cable (CMP/CL3P) is mandatory above any drop ceiling that's part of the HVAC return path — DOB checks. Fire-alarm integration under NYC Fire Code Chapter 907 is required for any PA system in a venue with occupancy over 300. The NYC Noise Code (Admin Code §24-218) caps you at 42 dB(A) at the nearest residential window after 10 PM — 311 complaints trigger DEP measurement visits, fines run $500-$25,000 per incident, and the April 21, 2026 crackdown added $800-$2,500 base fines plus hidden cameras at hotspots. ASCAP/BMI/SESAC/GMR licensing is non-negotiable — Spotify on the house system is a five-figure lawsuit waiting to happen, and a commercial BGM service (Soundtrack Your Brand, Mood Media, SiriusXM for Business) bundles all four PROs for $30-60/month per zone. And budget 8-15% of hardware annually for a service contract with a CTS-D-staffed NYC integrator who actually picks up at 11pm on a Saturday.
70V ceiling speakers, one zone amp, BGM streaming. The cafe / restaurant default.
Full-range cabinets + subs. Music is part of the room — not background.
Line arrays + dedicated sub arrays. Music IS the product. 100-115+ dB.
Industry-standard visiting-DJ rider stack. CDJ-3000 + DJM + booth monitor.
The brain — routes audio/video, mics, ducking, zones, scenes, touch panels.
Sports bar wall of TVs, menu boards, hotel lobby digital signage. NEVER consumer.
Direct-view LED behind DJ booth, on the bar, in the lobby. Seamless, bright, scalable.
Where a TV won't fit — ballrooms, private rooms, sports bar walls, atmospheric mapping.
JBL Pro is the safe default brand across the entire hospitality stack — Control Series for BGM ceiling, AE for medium rooms, VRX for compact line array, VTX for touring-grade clubs. Every NYC integrator stocks JBL or can get it same-week, the warranty network is the deepest in the category, and product longevity is documented across decades. Pair with Crown amps (also HARMAN) and BSS or Soundweb DSP for an end-to-end HARMAN system, or mix with QSC/Biamp on the DSP layer.
Bose Pro DesignMax is the BGM brand designers spec when the speaker has to disappear into the ceiling and the owner has to recognize the badge. The -LP (low-profile) variants fit back-boxes under 4 inches deep — the real constraint in NYC concrete-deck buildings with no above-ceiling depth. Panaray directional arrays are the legacy hotel-and-convention play. Pricing typically lands 15-30% above equivalent JBL Control, paid for in brand premium and architectural fit.
QSC pulled ahead of the pack in new commercial installs because Q-SYS lets a single certified integrator deploy audio, networked video, and control as one programmable system instead of three separate boxes. AcousticDesign (AD) Series ceiling speakers slot between JBL Control and Bose DesignMax on price; CX-Q amps take Dante/AES67 input directly; the K.2 powered portables are the best-value DJ-booth/foreground monitor on the market. The integrator must be Q-SYS Level 1/2/3 certified to program a Core, which enforces a quality baseline.
L-Acoustics pioneered the modern line array and is the de-facto standard in premium nightclubs and music-first venues where the music experience is the product. The K Series (K1/K2/K3/K3i, with KS28/KS21 subs) is the touring and club-install flagship — flown systems run $200K-$500K hardware-only before install, rigging, electrical, or tuning. SYVA is the architectural slim column for hotel lobbies and high-end restaurants. Sold only through certified integrators trained on Soundvision design software; commissioning requires an L-Acoustics certified system engineer on-site.
d&b is L-Acoustics' German competitor and shares the certified-dealer / certified-engineer go-to-market. Touring credentials are built on Coldplay, Metallica, U2 — neutral, highly-controllable sound with world-class amplification and DSP integration. In hospitality, d&b shows up in premium nightclubs, hotel ballrooms that double as live-music venues, and high-end lounges. KSL (electronic beam steering) is current flagship; Y Series is the mid-size install workhorse; xC/xS/E Series cover point-source install where line array is overkill.
The Pioneer DJ stack is what visiting DJs expect to walk up to without asking questions — 2x CDJ-3000 + DJM-A9 or DJM-V10 + dedicated booth monitor. Touring-tier riders specify these models by name; a club that doesn't meet rider minimums can't book headliner DJs. The DJM-900NXS2 ran the standard for a decade and is still in heavy service; the DJM-A9 (2023) is the current 4-channel flagship; the DJM-V10 is the 6-channel flagship for open-format DJs and complex routing. PLX-1000 turntables added back as vinyl resurges in techno/house/hip-hop programming.
Crestron is the premium control-system brand — every install requires a certified Crestron programmer writing SIMPL/SIMPL+ code, which delivers a fully custom result at the cost of high upfront programming labor (40-200+ hours @ $175-275/hr) and long-term programmer dependency. DM NVX (4K AV-over-IP) and DM NAX (audio-over-IP) replaced the older DigitalMedia matrix. Right answer for hotels, ballrooms, multi-room venues, and any project where a bespoke iPad UCI is part of the brand. Overkill for single-room bars and small restaurants — the programming alone dwarfs the hardware on small jobs.
Samsung is the volume leader in commercial displays for hospitality — the broadest range, widest channel, and MagicINFO content management built into nearly every model. QBR/QBB/QBC is the standard 16/7 commercial signage (32"-85", 500-700 nits); QMR is the high-brightness 16/7 step-up; OH Series is 2,500-4,000 nit outdoor-rated for patios and exterior walls; The Wall / IAB is direct-view LED for video walls. Critical: never spec a Samsung consumer TV (Frame, QLED) behind a sports bar — consumer warranty explicitly excludes commercial deployment, and you'll have no coverage when it fails.
Shure is the dominant wireless microphone brand in commercial hospitality. The product range scales from BLX (entry, $349-699/ch) through SLX-D (mid-tier digital, $599-1,199/ch) to QLX-D / ULX-D (install-focused, networked, AES-256, Dante) and Axient Digital (broadcast/top tier). Microflex Advance ceiling arrays (MXA901/910/920) are the modern default for hotel meeting rooms and ballrooms — Zoom and Teams certified, $2,500-$6,500 per array. The SM58 wired vocal mic remains the industry standard 60 years in.
